Traveling for a vacation, while having a destination, an intinerary, and may even have a religious or spiritual bent, is primarliy to rest, relax, unwind, get rejuvenated from the work and grind of everyday life. It's time to de-stress, to see "the sights", perhaps to cross something off of your bucket list.
A pilgrimage is a sacred journey, often to spiritually significant locales, for the purpose of inner transformation, to meet God in the struggles, challenges, joys, and unexpected graces along the way that might open us to deeper intimacy with the Lord. Pilgrimages are most effective when we have prepared ourseves through prayer, sometimes fasting, reflection, and discernment. Knowing WHY you are going on the piligrimage is essential - what graces are you hoping to receive from God out of the pilgrimage? Is there something significant that you are discerning and the pilgrimage might help you focus on listening to God's promptings? Is God inviting you to a deeper relationship with him? Has there been something troubling your soul and you are yearning for God's touch? These are some of the draws to pilgrimage. Of course, life itself can be and is a pilgrimage from an Ignatian perspective. But sometimes, "going on" a pilgrimage, along with all it's challenges away from the comforts of home can cause us to be more attentive to God's movements within us.
